Rabbi Lisa's Message

August 21, 2024

For many, this week has been one of “Beginning and Return.” Students, educators, and administrators from our own community, and beyond, are embarking on a new year of learning at school.

It takes courage, humility, and stamina to be a learner.

It takes courage, humility,  and stamina to be a teacher.

It takes courage, humility, and stamina to accept that we are all students and we are all teachers.

This truth is echoed by our Sages:

Who is wise? One who learns from all people.”

- Pirke Avot 4:1

In the pursuit of wisdom, we know that some of life’s greatest teachings are not always the ones learned in a classroom from a world class professor. A simple exchange or observation in the grocery line may yield a life changing epiphany.

Being open minded and open hearted in this grand classroom called Life is challenging.

As we step into the rhythm of a new school year, whether we are in an academic setting or not, may we accept the invitation to learn from all people and all situations. May we have the courage, humility, and stamina to be receptive students and thoughtful teachers. The times we live in call for it.

And for those embarking on an academic school year, I offer this lovely blessing from

Rabbi Margaret Frisch Klein

A Prayer for Going Back to School

New lunch box, multi-colored sharpies, a notebook

tucked in a new backpack.

A new outfit.

You are ready.

Off to school you go.

We hope

that this school year is great.

That you ask good questions

from anyone and everyone.

That you learn much

from your teachers, your parents, your friends.

That you are kind and compassionate,

that you are safe,

that you make friends,

That you become wise.

May this be a great year.
