Rabbi Lisa's Message

9/11/24

September 11th.

Like October 7th, recalling and voicing these particular dates, seeing them written on the page, evokes worlds of memory and feeling. Depending on our proximity to these calamities, we feel and remember more intensely. Yet it is mind boggling to think of the energy each of us carries in relationship to the events that happened on these dates. So many worlds of memory and feeling swirling within and around us.

Today is September 11th. Twenty three years ago on this day, our world was shaken and irrevocably changed. And so today, we take time to remember and to feel.

Judaism is a tradition rich in the practice of both memory and feeling. Our rituals for death and mourning create ample space for mourners to grieve in an organic and authentic way. Our rituals for remembrance radiate honor and respect for those we have lost. We keep the memories of our loved ones pulsing by lighting a candle, giving voice to their name, sharing their stories, and feeling the depth of our feelings. In all of this the memories of our loved ones become a blessing - alive and flowing from the very Source of Blessing.

We lost so much on September 11th. And yet we know that from loss transformation is possible. Holiness is possible. The Kaddish prayer speaks to these very possibilities.

May we continue to pick up the broken pieces from the tragic events in our world. From them may we continue to create the ongoing mosaic of our lives–a mosaic that brings meaning and healing to us all.
